BroadBand Light (BBLTM) by Sciton®  is the most powerful IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) device on the market. BBLTM uses advanced light energy-based regenerative technology to treat a variety of skin conditions associated with ageing, active lifestyles and sun damage. Our BBL treatment is one of our popular skin rejuvenation treatments at our cosmetic clinic in Canberra. Each treatment is tailored specifically by Dr. Ren Poh to address every patient’s unique skin concerns.

BBL® HERO™ (High Energy Rapid Output) is the latest next generation of phototherapy offered by Sciton. BroadBand Light delivered through BBL Hero at a higher rate, with four times the speed, three times peak power and two times cooling power. This enables Dr. Ren at Ren Cosmedical Canberra to provide BBL treatment in a fast, efficacious and comfortable manner for those who desire to achieve healthy and beautiful skin from head to toe. This innovation makes it a treatment convenient for even the busiest individuals.

BBL Hero BroadBand Light Sciton at Ren Cosmedical Canberrra

Due to its highly customisable abilities, a BBL treatment is only as good as its user. At Ren Cosmedical, our cosmetic physician, Dr. Ren Poh uses these technologies (BBL HERO, Forever Young BBLTM and BBLTM photocorrective) to his advantage to be able to customise and tailor a treatment plan unique to every individual’s needs. Dr. Ren Poh utilises a proprietary multi-pass approach that incorporates the pre-juventation treatment to his BBL treatments to maintain healthy-looking skin.

Prior to any laser or light treatment, it is utmost important to ensure that the treatment areas are suitable for treatment as it can be dangerous to treat lesions that are suspicious, leading to the delay in diagnosis of skin cancers. Being a fully trained and qualified medical practitioner, Dr. Ren Poh is able to offer a full skin cancer assessment prior to any treatment being performed.

Forever Young BBLTM is clinically proven not only to correct skin’s sun damage, but also to prevent the signs of ageing skin. This non-invasive treatment delivers BroadBand Light to the epidermis and dermis, stimulating changes in skin tone, texture, elasticity and pigmentation, with visible, long-lasting improvement after just one treatment. There is zero to minimal patient downtime.

In a retrospective study*, 15 patients ages 38 to 69 received at least one Forever Young BBLTM treatment per year for 5 to 11 years. Then, based on pre- and post-treatment photos, about 500 evaluators estimated the age of each patient. The study found that patients’ skin looked about 10 years younger than its actual age — due to improvement in the appearance of sun damage, and other signs of aging skin.

Forever Young BBLTM is not just an aesthetic treatment for existing skin damage. It can also be a preventive regimen — what we call “Prejuvenation™” — for keeping young skin looking young.

BBLTM and BBL® HERO™ can be used on any area of the body. The most common treatment areas are the ones with most exposure to harmful effects of sun’s UV damage such as face, neck, back, décolletage, shoulders, arms and back of hands. It is a suitable treatment for both male and female.

Skin conditions with signs of aging suitable for BBL treatment includes:

  • sun damaged skin
  • pigmentation (dyschromia and ephelides/freckles)
  • vascular lesions (rosacea, telangiectasia and cherry angiomas)
  • enlarged pores

For the rejuvenation of sun damaged skin, typically 4 to 5 treatments will be necessary to produce optimal results. Treatments are usually spaced at 3 to 4 weeks intervals but can be further apart. Thereafter, the maintenance program which incorporates Forever Young BBLTM or BBL® HERO™ is recommended to be undertaken once every 4 to 6 months, to keep skin as healthy as possible. It is important to note that individual results may vary and therefore the treatment required is unique for each individual.

For acne treatment, Forever Clear BBLTM is used to destroy acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation and redness, making way for clearer and healthier skin. It is a fast, comfortable and non-invasive treatment with minimal to no patient downtime. Click the provided link for more information on our Forever Clear BBL acne treatment.

During your BBL consultation:

Our cosmetic physician will have a face-to-face consultation with you where you can discuss your concerns or questions about the treatment. Please ensure that all makeup is removed well before your consultation for an accurate examination of your facial skin. You may leave your sunscreen on (preferably untinted), which can be removed during consultation.

Please advise our cosmetic physician if you are:

  • regularly taking anti-coagulation therapy
  • have a skin condition
  • have a history of herpes or cold sores (anti-viral medication pre and post treatment is highly recommended to prevent outbreak of cold sores. It can be prescribed to you if needed)

To ensure skin is in optimal condition before BBL treatment, a lightening cream or skin preparation cream may be prescribed by our cosmetic physician to be used for 2 to 4 weeks during the initial consultation.

Skin preparation / requirement before BBL treatment:

The key to achieving desirable results with BBL is to use a combination of sun protection regularly. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen regularly and sun protection clothing (e.g., hats, long sleeves shirts, umbrella). Always reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

Avoid extended sun exposure such as beach, travel to sunny locations, sunbathing, outdoor sports.

Stop use of topical retinol or retinoic acid for 1 week prior to treatment.

No recent sunburn experience or fake tans for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.

No isotretinoin for at least 6 months prior to treatment.

On the day of BBL treatment appointment:

Please come without heavy makeup on face. Use sunscreen only and this will be removed at clinic before treatment.

Please leave jewellery (e.g., earrings, piercings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.) at home or remove them before treatment.

Wear a wide brim hat or use umbrella before and after treatment.

The area of skin being treated is firstly cleansed and the patient’s eyes are protected with safety shields or glasses.

During the treatment, there is a noticeable flash sensation similar to the flash of a camera with each pulse of the laser. Some slight discomfort might be felt, which is often described as a warm elastic band flicked onto the skin. However, any discomfort is momentary and there is no need for any topical anaesthetic cream. If pain is a concern, topical anaesthetic cream can be offered or the use of cold compressed air can be used to minimise the discomfort associated with the procedure.

Minimal downtime with minimal pain.

Patient may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours to a day. If pigmented lesions are treated, some darkening of the treated area will be expected, followed by fading and flaking off over several days to weeks.

Patient can resume normal activity post treatment.

Makeup can be applied immediately post treatment.

Treatment takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes, depending on treatment areas and complexities.

The results of a BBL treatment varies between individuals and among skin types. Generally, the results are best appreciated 2 to 3 weeks after treatment. A few sessions might be required to obtain expected results, particularly for individuals with darker skin type or in individuals with extensive sun damage.

BBL treatments can be used in combination with various other procedures such as Sciton Halo Pro, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, Healite II LED light therapy, chemical peels, etc. Talk to our cosmetic physician to customise your treatment plan to achieve your desired aesthetic outcome.
