Anti-Wrinkle Injections

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

At Ren Cosmedical Canberra, anti-wrinkle treatment is one of our most popular anti-ageing treatments that is administered by our cosmetic doctor injector, Dr. Ren Poh. Known for its safe and effective way to dramatically improve a person’s facial appearance, it is no wonder that anti-wrinkle injections remain the number one most commonly performed non-surgical cosmetic procedure done around the world. This is because anti-wrinkle injections does not only soften and reduce existing lines or wrinkles on the face, it can also help to prevent future ones from developing.

There are different types of botulinum toxin. The type that is used most widely is botulinum toxin type A. There are many different manufacturers/distributors of this type worldwide. In Australia, there are only 3 main distributors of this toxin that is approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

As time goes by, there will likely be more distributors approved by the TGA. Due to the current restrictions imposed by the TGA, we are unable to advertise the brands of anti-wrinkle injections used at Ren Cosmedical.

Regardless of the brand of botulinum toxin used, the science behind the mechanism of action is the same. Botulinum toxin type A is a highly effective neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It affects the neurotransmitters of the injected area. Type A consists of a heavy chain that mediates entry of the toxin into the presynaptic terminal and a light chain that cleaves SNAP-25, thereby blocking synaptic vesicle exocytosis.

Essentially, it means that it stops the transmission signal between the nerve and muscle, thereby paralysing the targeted muscle. It is not a permanent treatment as in time, new signals will be formed by the body and therefore, treatments will need to be repeated. This is generally in the timeframe of 3 to 4 months.

With aging, we tend to develop lines and wrinkles in areas of our face which affect our appearance, sometimes giving others the impression of us looking tired, sad or angry. Each of us experience facial aging differently, depending on various factors such as lifestyle, sun exposure, gender, genetics, skin colour, weight changes and stress. However, the main reason of developing lines and wrinkles are due to the movement of our facial muscles that we use on a daily basis for function and expression. The lines that develop can be classified as dynamic or static. With dynamic lines, the lines are only visible on facial movements or expressions. However, with static lines, the lines are visible at rest. When these static lines develop, it is harder to treat and will generally costs more to reverse. This is why incorporating anti-wrinkle injections as part of skincare can be cost-effective and is a less invasive approach to maintaining youthful appearance.

The most requested treatment areas with anti-wrinkle injections are forehead lines, frown lines (also known as glabellar lines or “11 lines”, eyebrows for eyebrow lift, crow’s feet, bunny lines and lip lines (smoker’s line). Anti-wrinkle can also treat gummy smile, downturned mouth (which causes sad or angry appearance), jaw slimming, dimpled chin and neck band lines. Men can also be treated with anti-wrinkle injections in the same way as women, but they will often require more units of anti-wrinkle products in all treatment areas, due to the genetic differences in muscle mass.

Yes, anti-wrinkle injections can also be used for facial lifting. By paralysing certain muscles of the face, Dr. Ren can create a desirable lifting effect for areas such as eyebrows, nose and lower face with anti-wrinkle injections. To further enhance this desirable facial lifting effect, anti-wrinkle injections can be paired with dermal fillers , bio-remodelling injectables or facial thread lift, thereby achieving a non-surgical face lift.

The “lip flip” can also be created by relaxing the muscles with the anti-wrinkle product, injected just above the upper lip, causing it to curl or flip outwards. This gives the impression of a larger, more defined upper lip, without adding volume. The “lip flip” can be combined with PDO monothreads to further accentuate and define lips, especially on Cupid’s bow area of the upper lip. This is known as lip thread lift, which is a great option for non-surgical lip enhancement that is relatively pain-free and helps to stimulate collagen production.

Despite being commonly known as an anti-wrinkle injection, botulinum toxin type A can also be used for other non-anti-wrinkle purposes such as injections into the masseter muscles. This is a procedure commonly performed to help address a variety of issues such as to help with facial slimming, bruxism and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. It is a common procedure performed among our Asian patients as it helps to achieve the much desired V-shaped or heart-shaped face.

Another common use of botulinum toxin injections is in the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) by blocking the sweat glands of the armpits, scalp, hands or feet.

There are also many non-cosmetic indications for the use of botulinum toxin type A in the medical field such as to treat chronic migraines, dystonia, blepharospasm, strabismus, overactive bladder, contractures or spasticity. These treatments, however, are not performed at Ren Cosmedical.

As new innovations continue to arise in the world of anti-wrinkle injections, Dr. Ren Poh is committed with continuing his professional development and education to ensure that he can offer the best and most innovative treatments for his patients.

Whilst anti-wrinkle injections eliminate dynamic lines, they do not address static lines and loss of volume. This is where dermal filler can be useful to help soften static lines and replace volume loss. Dermal fillers can help to restore volume to the cheeks, smooth out wrinkles and lines to provide an overall refeshed and radiant appearance.

Other modalities such as HALO fractionated laser therapy, Morpheus8, FaceTite, BroadBand Light (BBL), bio-remodelling injectables, PDO monothreads or facial thread lifts are great adjunct to anti-wrinkle injections. Dr. Ren Poh will provide you with the best treatment plan tailored to your concerns during your consultation.
